Toolset
- Standard HTML – Pages will be based on standard Hyper Text Markup
Language (HTML), avoiding vendor extensions unless they have been adopted by
the WWW community and the major browsers.
- PHP – This is an open source server side scripting language that is
heavily used in the industry and gaining popularity. It provides the ability
to easily create and implement web pages with dynamic content.
- Unix Hosting – While the tools selected will operate in a Microsoft NT
environment, Unix was selected as a more mature and secure environment. The
web pages, as developed, will be portable across Unix and NT systems.
- Perl – Another open source scripting language that is generally used for
Common Gateway Interface (CGI) scripting and background utilities.
- GNU C – In the event that any programs are required, they will be
written in C which is an industry standard language.
- MySQL – This a relational database that is heavily used in the web
industry. It supports a subset of the capabilities of major (and expensive)
database engines such as Oracle. It has more than enough capability to meet
the requirements of this implementation. It is also open source software.
Anything implemented could be easily ported to any database that supports
Structured Query Language (SQL).
- Javascript – This is a browser side scripting language that enables
dynamic capabilities. It use is limited by the lack of a standard that the
browser vendors agree on. For those functions that are supported by the
majority of browsers, there may be application within this implementation.
