Content and Data ProtectionThe purpose of the document is to clearly define what web site content is, how it is managed, how it is protected and who is responsible for it. This document also clarifies the ownership for software used to implement the web site. Content - What is it?Content is the information on a web site. It can take many forms including text, documents, tables, pictures and images. The web site components like nav bars, buttons and links are not content although they may be closely related. Content - How is it managed?Web sites provided by JMT Services are designed so that the web site owners are able to manage the content. In those instances where an owner cannot or chooses not to manage their own content, JMT Services may be requested to perform the management functions. Content - How is it protected?Protection can have several meanings in the content of a web site. This includes limiting access to specified users and backing up the content. Access protections - The web site can be configured to limit access using userid/passwords. Note that you should always carefully consider what type of data you are protecting and how much protection it needs. The userid/password protection is not foolproof and determined hackers will be able to penetrate it especially given that most people do not use secure passwords. Never put anything on the web site like credit card data or a social security number. From a backup perspective, your content is backed up daily during the early morning hours. Content - Who is responsible for it?Ultimately the web site owner is responsible for the content, whether they maintain it or JMT Services is requested to do so. This means you cannot publish someone else's copyrighted material. In the event you publish that is owned by someone else or is in some way not appropriate, you as the web site owner are responsible. Protection of Company InformationAny company information you post on your web site is public information. If you provide JMT Services or its independent contractors with non-public information needed to operate your web site or for other purposes that non-public information will not be shared with any other entity without your permission. Some of our clients are competitors and under no circumstances do we share non-public information with anyone else. Software Ownership - Custom Developed SoftwareIf JMT Services develops software for you at the full "Developer" labor rates then you as the web site owner, own that software. There is currently no software of this type in use on any JMT Services client web sites. Software Ownership - JMT Services Owned SoftwareThe software used to implement web sites provided by JMT Servicces is owned by JMT Services LLC. JMT Services LLC retains the rights to determine where and how that software is used. Back to User |
